At just 18 years old, Andru van Zyl has shown South Africa what it means to turn compassion into action.

Over, Andru completed an extraordinary solo cycle of more than 2 500km from Polokwane to Cape Town, dedicating every kilometer to children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders. Riding in support of CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa through The Cows, Andru has raised over R730 000 for our cause.

Andru’s journey began not with a bicycle, but with heart.

While serving as head boy at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), Andru witnessed a friend undergo cancer treatment. Seeing firsthand the physical and emotional toll that cancer takes on young people and their families left a lasting impact on him. Instead of spending his matric holiday resting after achieving six distinctions, Andru chose to dedicate his time and energy to something far greater than himself. He committed to raising funds for CHOC by taking on a challenge that would test him mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Armed with his father’s mountain bike and carrying his own essentials, Andru set off from Polokwane with a clear purpose: to make a difference in the lives of families facing childhood cancer. He rode back roads and long stretches of highway, navigating heat, wind, fatigue, and isolation. This was a fully self-supported ride, no professional team, no luxury support vehicles, just determination and belief in the cause.

Along the way, communities, fellow cyclists, and local businesses stepped in to offer encouragement and assistance. Their support reflected the same spirit that drives The Cows: ordinary people doing extraordinary things for a shared purpose.

The Cows is built on a simple but powerful idea, LOVE LIVING LIFE, but also to harness personal lifestyle challenges to raise funds and awareness for CHOC. Whether members swim, run, cycle, paddle, or climb, every challenge is shaped by individual passion.

Andru’s ride embodied this ethos perfectly. What started as a personal goal grew into a national movement of support. Friends, family, schools, businesses, and strangers followed his journey and contributed to his fundraising campaign.

After weeks on the road, Andru arrived in Cape Town, welcomed by supporters at the iconic Sea Point Promenade. It was a fitting end to a journey defined by resilience, courage, and heart. Fresh from his academic achievements and with tentative acceptance into medical school at the University of Pretoria, Andru’s future is bright and we are so proud to have him as part of our herd!
